As the National Head for Events & Sr. General Manager for Business Standard – Western Region, Sangita Kheora Thakur started young on her dreams. After completing her basic education in Shimla, she was considering undertaking a career in law. But her affinity towards the power a newspaper possesses in voicing opinions, drew her to a career in the print industry.

Her stint in the print industry began after she completed her major in Economics. She visited a daily newspaper and proceeded to meet the editor of the newspaper, convincing him to give her a job in the editorial department. After simultaneously completing her diploma in marketing and advertising, she moved on to Indian Express and worked there for four years. She later moved on to Business Standard and has been a part of it for about 19 years now. Along with building her career, Sangita also worked as a drama artist at All India Radio, Shimla. “During my college days, I used to get calls from All India Radio to give workshops and be part of small discussions and same on television also. I did theatre also along with my dad in Shimla and also in Mumbai for quite some time. But then once I got into serious business that definitely had to take the backstage.” When asked if it was a tough decision to choose between acting and her career she stated, “I knew by then I wanted to concentrate on my career and it has been a deeply satisfying experience for me. There are hurdles that we need to face every day and overcome, which we just need to accept.”

In spite of her busy schedule, she still manages to balance her personal life. At a very young age she was given the freedom to make her own decisions, “When I used to come in late after work at night, I was never questioned. It gave me a sense of pride and also the ability to respect freedom. This was also my condition for getting married, the freedom to choose my life and my career path. My husband being like-minded agreed completely, which has also been a part of my progress.” Having been in the industry for almost 25 years now, she has experienced that there are no challenges enforced upon you on the basis of your gender. She states that everyone receives basis of what they work for and how they conduct themselves.

Looking back at her life she says, “I have been very content with the decisions I have made. But, I do wish I could have given a little more importance to my interests apart from work. I used to write before, but over the time it has diminished. I have been working towards opening that window again, and also explore newer forms of theatre.”

She went on to speak about how people need to be able to make decisions of their own without being influenced by fads or propagandas. As a woman it is essential to understand your full potential, the ability to multitask, to balance work life and also hold your head high to face the consequences of your decisions. She spoke about how women should realise their individuality and their strengths without being tied down by society norms. As a parting note, she advised women who are just beginning their career, “First of all, you need to be mentally strong. Second, keep everything transparent with your family. And finally, never put health at the backseat, all your goals will require the support of your health.”

Her story certainly helps us understand that there is no bar in the industry for any person to achieve success, be it a man or a woman. So work relentlessly, with your feet on the ground and your head held high, you are sure to achieve your dreams.
